Shrimp with Homemade Cocktail Sauce

I love making things from scratch because you can adjust flavors and seasonings to fit your liking. It is also significantly less expensive to keep ingredients on hand and make small servings rather than buying large quantities of pre-made foods that expire before you can finish them. One of my favorite midday, low-carb, high-protein snacks is shrimp with cocktail sauce. It takes seconds to make and is super low in calories.

Cocktail sauce only contains 3 ingredients:

  1. Ketchup – most of us probably always have on hand.
  2. Fresh horseradish – My grocery store sells this in the Polish “ethnic” section for $3
  3. Lemon juice – Do your mouth a favor and ALWAYS use fresh lemon juice.

Below are the quantities I usually use. If you like it sweeter, add more ketchup. If you like it spicier, add more horseradish. Either way, you will find it enormously better than jarred cocktail sauce. Enjoy!

Homemade Cocktail Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 2 teaspoons fresh prepared horseradish
  • juice of 1/2 small lemon


Combine ketchup and horseradish in a small bowl. When thoroughly mixed, squeeze in fresh lemon juice. Taste. Adjust to your liking.
